My name is Martin Gollery, and this book is the story of my lake—Lake Tahoe.
It is a place of many moods, many faces.
Do not look here for a guide to restaurants or hiking trails or the best nightclubs—this is a book about the lake itself, and the mountains that surround it.
Lake Tahoe is a place where snowfall is measured in feet, not inches. A place where wind gusts over the ridges can often top 100 miles per hour. A place where people have drowned and their bodies never recovered.
Yet, it is also a place where children play happily in the water, families walk through meadows of wildflowers, and paddlers glide over still waters. It is a place where you may find yourself skiing down a run on a fine Spring morning, and lying on a sandy beach that same afternoon. It is a place where you might find a famous Olympic athlete at a music venue.
Above all, Lake Tahoe is a place of great beauty, a place where the soul is restored. As Mark Twain once observed, “a week of camping at Lake Tahoe would restore an Egyptian Mummy to its former vigor.” I have not tested this theory, but I can understand the sentiment.
These are my impressions of the beauty to be found here. It is my great hope that you, and the people that you share it with will come to say, “This is my lake—Lake Tahoe. The Lake of the Sky!”
